Back to Country: U.S.A. Canada | Type: Award
Giant Step Award — USA / Canada

  What is it?

The Giant Step Award is given annually to a school library or the youth section of a public library in the U.S.A. or Canada which, over the previous three yearshas 'made a real difference in their institution'.

  PaperTigers says...

... Any award that highlights the hard work, often behind the scenes, that goes into making libraries for young people central to both learning itself and nurturing a love of learning can only be a good thing.

  Tell me more…
  • The Award, given annually, is open to any library or media centre for young people in the U.S.A. or Canada which can show that it has taken a 'giant step' in the services it offers and the contribution it has made to the community it serves.
  • It is awarded jointly by Thomson Gale and the School Library Journal.
  • There are cash prizes of $10,000 to be won.
  • Closing date for entries is mid February.
  • The judging panel consists of three judges from school library media programs, three from youth services departments in public libraries and one Thomson Gale curriculum specialist; they may visit libraries to help them come to a decision.
