This award helps bring Mildred Batchelder's vision to life. A former executive director of the Association for Library Service to Children, she believed in the importance of good books for children in translation, from all parts of the world. Such vision deserves a following and much praise.

- The award was established in 1966, in the belief that "interchange of children's books between countries, through translation, influences communication between the peoples of those countries".
- The award is presented by
ALSC (Association for Library Services to Children), a division of the American Library Association.
- Eligible books must be originally published in a foreign language, in a foreign country, and subsequently published in English in the United States.
- Winner book is chosen by a judging panel comprised of five members of ALSC.
- Award is presented to the winning publisher during the membership meeting of the ALSC held during the ALA Annual Conference, each summer.
