- The Awards are given annually to ten books published the previous year. The books are chosen as a top-ten list, which allows for a balnce between fiction and non-fiction as well as a spread of genres.
- The Award is jointly sponsored by Booklist and the Margaret Alexander Edwards Trust. Edwards, who was known as Alex to her friends and after whom the Awards are named, was an inspirational librarian who specialised in YA books. She wrote The Fair Garden and the Swarm of Beasts: The Library and the Young Adult (ALA, 2002).
- Books selected must be from a publisher's adult booklist.
- Books published abroad in English or in translation in the U.S. are eligible.
- The Awards list is published in the ALA's annual Guide to Best Reading and in Booklist as close as possible to th dates seleced for that year's National Library Week.
- The Awards for 2007 include Color of the Sea by John Hamamura.
