- Sponsored by the George Cedric Metcalf Foundation, the Vicky Metcalf Award was originally administered by the Canadian Authors Association and is now presented by the Writers' Trust of Canada.
- A $15,000 cash prize is awarded to one author for his or her body of work.
- The winner is announced and the award presented at the Great Literary Awards held each Spring in Toronto.
- Past winners include Tim Wynne-Jones, Jean Little, Sheree Fitch and Deborah Ellis.
