Q&A

You won the 2008 PBBY-Alcala Silver Prize for your artwork for the Salanga-winning story, Naku, Nakuu, Nakuuu! by Nanoy Rafael. This was the second year in a row you won this prize. How does it feel? What do this and the other awards you have received to date mean to you?

I feel very grateful for being recognized for the hard work and dedication I put into every artwork I create. It inspires me to do more, and better. I hope that my achievements will also inspire other aspiring artists, and people in general, to do their best, so that they, too, can change their lives one day.

When did you realize you wanted to pursue art as a career? How did your first published work come about?

When I was a kid, I always knew I wanted to draw and paint. Despite perceptions that there is no money in art making (especially in a country like ours), I pursued my passion. Now I am doing what I really love and getting paid for it - and being recognized for it too is like icing on the cake.

Many people helped me realize my dream of being published. They taught me the ins and outs of children's book publishing. I'm very glad my first book was successful and paved the way for other exciting projects.

Do you have a favorite technique? How would you describe your style?

I love to experiment with different techniques to give each story a style of its own. Right now, I am using pencil and acrylics - I just love the ease of controlling the medium and the vintage effect I am producing. I like using pencils and crayons for drawing. It's therapeutic. Sometimes I forget about time and the world around me through drawing.

I strive to convey something more than what the words explain with my illustrations. Instead of illustrating the obvious scenes, I visually interpret the words to try to stir the reader's imagination. I usually put positive Filipino words and quotes as details in my artwork, in an attempt to send a subliminal message to young people.

What are you working on now?

I'm currently working on some of my dream projects: an almost wordless children's book, a collector's edition book, and a children's book written by one of our national artists.
